The annual ritual of universities making sad-faced announcements of expenses increases and blaming these folks on state funding cuts took place last week. And in keeping along with tradition, media abandoned common journalistic principles and quite simply functioned as the Regent’s press business.

Media didn’t question whether university training increases could be partially as well as fully avoided (they can) or maybe attempt to put anything during context that would upset this narrative C perhaps because doing so might (a) require a bit of detective work and (b) challenge the media collective belief that state tax protection plan and/or stingy legislators (one hoot connected with an oxymoron) are to blame.

University Tuition Heightens Can Be Avoided

The Governor’s Budget Report seeing that amended by the Conference Panel Report budget summary coming from Legislative Research  shows funding for the six state colleges and universities is flat over the future two years; it declines by simply 0.9 percent in FY 2018 as well as increases by 0.9 % in FY 2019.  If inflation continues on at its current stride (1.4 percent for the latest fiscal year), universities may conceivably have to deal with a 2.Three percent differential next year (small state capital decline plus inflation) but the tuition hikes are more importantly between 2.5 percent and 2.9 percent.

The first question mass media should ask is simple: “Taxpayers in addition to employers routinely have to find ways to perform about 2 percent more efficiently, so just why can’t universities do that?”  Doing so would prompt with the multitude of indignation and pearl-clutching so it’s just not placed in polite government company, although universities have been known to waste products a buck or two.

Data from your Regents annual reports certainly shows per-student spending has exceeded air pump over recent years.  The Institution of Kansas increased expending by 71 percent somewhere between 2002 and 2016 while blowing up was just 30 percent.  K-State also wasted well in excess of inflation, which has a 55 percent jump.  Wichita Condition and Pittsburg State were simply just above inflation at Thirty-one percent, Emporia State was Up to 29 percent and Fort Hays Express actually reduced costs by way of 20 percent) but collectively, the actual six universities’ costs went up by Forty three percent.

Educational spending as determined by the Regents does not include scholarships, research, maintenance, public program and other costs; inflation is a Consumer Price Index intended for Midwest Urban Cities using a fiscal year basis.

Here’s yet another good question media ignored: “Why possibly not use excess tuition obtained in prior years this is still sitting in the bank?”

Tuition is deposited in a special finance that can be tracked annually and KPI puts out the balances each year about KansasOpenGov.org.  Government funds run just like a checkbook, so growing annual balances means extra money has been collected than invested.  The six universities with each other had $11.4 million with unspent tuition money on June 30, 2003 but the total grew to $65.9 million by simply June 30, 2016.  It would simply need $5.6 million to cover an inflationary increasing amount of state funding so universities and colleges could easily avoid university fees increases by using just a little bit of money students already paid.

Excessive University fees Hikes

University of Kansas Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little told a Board of Regents, “We don’t want to preserve students away because of the tuition” but her actions say or else.  Adjusting tuition and fees for inflation and a small decrease in state funding considering the fact that 2002 would have produced the 65 percent increase through the current year, but KU went up in excess of four times that amount, hiking educational costs and fees by 268 percent!  K-State has been almost as unfriendly to trainees and parents, with a 236 percent boost.  The smallest increase, 114 percent at Fort Hays State, was still excess of necessary to keep up with inflation.

Unnecessary and also excessive university tuition outdoor hikes is just another sad sort of government putting its own hobbies ahead of citizens and students, with the full support associated with a sympathetic media.
